Our Mission
Chalky self portraits scribed along the coastal promenade, made by the children who have been hugely missing the closeness of friends and families. With each portrait comes a chance to donate to the CHALK WALK fund for local children’s mental health charities supporting families and individuals in heightened vulnerability over the COVID-19 lockdown and beyond.
The CHALK WALK project blossomed when its founder was on a lockdown daily walk along the sea promenade with her young daughter. She asked her mother if she could use the sea chalk they found to draw a picture of her and her best friend so she ‘could hold her hand’. They sent a picture of the portrait to her friend who together with her family walked to the same spot the next day and added to the portrait. And so the picture and the project began to grow.
Internationally, this has been an incredibly challenging time for vulnerable families and it is likely to have many long term repercussions.
Our hope for this project is to bring awareness, involvement and support through creative means directly back into local communities. Evolving to perhaps become an initiative that takes on a chalky momentum of it’s own.
Currently the funds raised through chalk portraits, online events, artist collaborations, and donations will be evenly distributed between the collated list of Thanet’s local children’s charities, organisation and volunteers.
